Today Liam had an appointment with a developmental pediatrician at UMass Memorial Hospital. This appointment was a follow-up from his stay in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit after his traumatic birth experience. I wasn't too nervous, as Liam has seemed right on track or ahead of schedule according to What to Expect in the First Year. And, as if he was anticipating this appointment, he added two new skills to his repetoire last night--sitting up from the stomach position and doing an army crawl.
The doctor and two pediatric residents spent about an hour asking me questions, examining Liam, and putting Liam through all sorts of tests. Of course, the doctors were impressed by his growth rate. (He gained almost a pound and grew a half an inch since his 6 month visit to weigh in at 20 lbs. 5 oz. and measure 28.5 inches!) He performed all of his tests very well, but he seemed to be in a pensive mood and did not demonstrate his full range of vocalizations. He waited until we got to the car to start his "talking." He will get a second chance to show off his developmental prowess at the next, and hopefully, final appointment with the developmental pediatrician at 18 months.
Once again I cannot believe how fortunate we were that Liam was able to make a quick and complete recovery from such a harrowing entry into this world, one that my obstetrician told me that she will never forget.
