Wolf Scout Fun

We've had a lot of Cub Scout (or as Evan insists I say, Wolf Scout) fun over the past few weeks with more to come in February. This weekend in the midst of a moderate snowstorm we had the Pine Wars. The Pine Wars was the name given to the annual Pinewood Derby which had a Star Wars theme this year. For the first time, Liam also made a car to race in the family races.

With much help from Grampa, Evan and Liam had appropriately themed and beautifully cut cars. Evan's car was Anakin's airspeeder, and Liam's car was Luke's landspeeder. Both cars passed inspection on registration night, and I breathed a sigh of relief. The rules for the cars are quite strict, but the volunteer dads will do all they can to make sure all scouts have a legal car for race day.

Once the car has the seal of approval, the scout brings it to a special room where it is sequestered for the night. The next morning when you arrive for the race, all of the cars are laid out by den near the track. The array of cars was impressive this year as usual.

The Cubmasters were all decked out in their Jedi robes, and one of the mom leaders dressed as Princess Leia. You can see the care with which the Cubmaster treat the cars below as Mr. Wiegand places Liam's car on the track.

While neither boy had a fast car this year and Evan missed out on a design award, we all had a great time. Evan handled the lack of a prize with much grace for a 7 year old. Many of our neighbors and church friends were on hand, and Uncle Brian, Henry and Hazel, as well as Nana and Grampa, stopped by. It was a great opportunity to catch up with everyone in the midst of winter isolation.

Our second scouting event of the week was a tour of the Big Y Supermarket in Holden as part of our cooking and eating requirement for the Wolf rank. Shelley from customer service gave us an interesting and fun tour that included a walk in the huge refrigerator and freezer.

We decorated cookies in the bakery department. It's a good thing that that grouchy baker went home. Those of you who shop at the Big Y know what I'm talking about.

The scouts even got to pat a lobster from the tank.

When the tour was over, the Scouts were able to eat a pizza that they watched being prepared and the cookies that they frosted in the cafe. It was a great night!

Now it's on to the Blue and Gold Banquet and the Worcester Sharks game in February.

Yours in scouting,
