February Break

This year's February break revolved around my training for the Boston Marathon (more about that in a later post) as many things do these days. Because I was running the Half at the Hamptons, we headed to New Hampshire. The boys could care less where we were going as long as we were staying in a hotel, and you can see below how happy that makes Liam. My main work on the vacation, other than packing, was to run 13.1 miles on Sunday. Given the mileage I've been running on my long runs, the distance didn't seem too daunting, but the windy and cold conditions along the ocean did. Fortunately, the wind died down a bit before race time, but we did not get the promised tailwind for the last 5 miles of the race. It wasn't as cold as I thought it would be, but ice did form in the water at the stops.

It wasn't my fastest time (2:02 and change), but I had the best cheering ever. Greg went against the rules and managed to drive the van to mile 1, 7, and 12 of the course. The boys sat patiently in the back of the minivan and wrote inspiring messages on the etch-a-sketch.

Here is a shot of all of the luggage we lug into a hotel for a two night stay. A picture says it all.

The day before the race, we stopped in Manchester to go to the See Discovery Museum which was quite a find. There were lots of neat, interactive displays like this plasma ball where Liam could make Sith lightning.

But, the highlight was a recreation of historic downtown Manchester in Legos. The boys circled the exhibit at least four time taking in all of the detail. The entire exhibit was almost as big as the first floor of our house with several blocks of Manchester, two running rivers and a train, and more Lego people than you can imagine. Evan insisted there was even a Harry Potter figure, or was that Uncle Brian?

On the way home, we stopped at the McAuliffe-Shepard Space Discovery Center in Concord. The boys were a little younger for the museum, but since we got in for free with our Ecotarium membership, it didn't matter. They enjoyed a planetarium show and the flight simulator the best. We'll have to go back when they are a little older can be wowed by some of the other exhibits.
