North Pole Bound

This weekend the McGurins were bound for the North Pole, aka Jefferson, NH, to visit Santa Claus. It was a 3.5 hour trip to the remote location where we had to travel about 20 minutes to find a place for breakfast. The Mooselook Restaurant (above) looked a little chancy from the outside, but it was adorable inside. We had a great breakfast and wonderful service. I'd highly recommend the McMoose Sandwich!

We made the trip with two other families from our neighborhood and stayed in the Cabot Lodge which featured a huge, real Christmas tree and large indoor pool. The pool did not seem to be heated, and we allowed the kids to violate the rule of 18 plus for the hot tub. They were blue!

On Saturday, we spent the day at Santa's Village, a retro amusement park purported to be the home of Santa Claus. It was a madhouse with huge crowds. There were lines for every ride, and Liam would have been perfectly happy to play with the penguin trash cans and sit on dirty snow mounds. The boys did enjoy the Rudolph Carousel, Sleigh Ride Monorail, Jingle Bell Express, and live reindeer. The line for Santa Claus was unbelieveably long, and we knew the boys would never make it. It seemed strange to travel all that way and not see Santa, but the only child who questioned this was the youngest one--Liam who said "I came to the North Pole and I did not see Santa."

As we left Santa Village exhausted from chasing and carrying Liam and pushing an empty stroller, we assured Liam and Evan that Santa often made local visits and probably had Holden on his list. Fortunately, we didn't have to wait that long. Before we went home, we decided to go see The Polar Express which was showing at an old-time movie theater in town. The Rialto did it up right complete with a train conductor, free cocoa during the show, and a visit from Santa himself. All of this for free! The boys were very well behaved during the entire movie, and they were very comfortable going up to visit with Santa on the stage.
