Evan had his first camping adventure with Cub Scouts this weekend, and it was a huge success. Pack 46 camps in Treasure Valley in Rutland which is close by but feels like you are deep in the woods. I was concerned that Evan might not last (or I might not last) through the night if we arrived at 8:30 AM when the official activities began. It was a pretty cold weekend!We arrived in time to attend the last "station" of the day which was first aid led by the Holden Fire Department. The Tiger Cubs had fun splinting each other and lifting each other with a stretcher. Then, we got settled in the bunkhouse which was much nicer than I anticipated--heated, bunks with mattresses, and separate rooms for eight campers. The older Cub Scouts were sleeping in tents, but Tiger Cubs get first dibs on the bunks.
Each den was responsible for preparing its own dinner. There were all kinds of cooking arrangements set up all around the lodge. Our Den Leader made chicken pot pie and beef stew in Dutch ovens over the campfire. Another Den constructed homemade box ovens to cook calzones. While the food was cooking, Evan got to know the boys in his den better by building forts in the woods and collecting fire wood.
Greg took over the camping adventure as night fell. After dinner, the Cub Scouts sat around a campfire, toasted marshmallows, performed skits, and received awards. Evan was very excited to receive his first badge, the Bobcat. Evan enjoyed sleeping in the top bunk, but Greg found it a little hard to sleep with all of the snoring.
The next morning Greg and Evan explored Treasure Valley a little bit before enjoying a full breakfast in the lodge prepared by some of the moms. They were even got home in time to go to church.
