It was a long wait until our weeklong vacation at the Cape, but it was worth it. We just got back from spending 7 days at Uncle Steve and Susan's beach house in Eastham which they generously offered to us for free. It is a beautiful home in a great location filled with the spirit and artistry of my Aunt Paula. Evan, who never had the joy of knowing my aunt, was impressed by her quilts and cross-stitch pictures, and he and Liam spent most night sleeping on the floor making a sleepiing bag out of the quilts.
For the first three days of vacation, my parents joined us which was especially great because Greg had to stay home to work until Tuesday afternoon. Nana endured the torture of Evan and Liam's fighting in the back seat with good humor. (One of the best moments occurred about an hour into the trip when Liam asked, "Where did Grampa go?" He was driving his own car.)
Once we arrived, we had lunch and hit First Encounter Beach where the boys enjoyed boogie boarding and digging in the sand.

On the second day of our vacation, we made the first of two trips to the Wellfleet Sanctuary maintained by one of our favorite organizations, the Massachusetts Audubon Society. This sanctuary was amazing with a great visitor center and trails. Baby Diamondback Terrapin Turtles had just been born 2 days prior and were on display.

Liam was mesmerized.

Evan liked the baby turtles, but he was even more impressed with the fiddler crabs along the Boardwalk trail and at bay. There was day camp going at the sanctuary just like the local ones Evan had enjoyed so much, and he joined right in with the campers digging for crabs and other treasures.

Then it was back to First Encounter Beach for a few hours once the parking guards were gone.

Before Nana and Grampa left on Tuesday, we went to the Salt Pond Visitor Center at the National Seashore to look at the museum and walk some trails. The trails were nice, but the poison ivy threat was not. As usual, Liam enjoyed his favorite way of hiking--atop Grampa's shoulders.

Later that day, Greg finally arrived for vacation, and we went to one of our favorite beaches, Crowe's Pasture in Dennis which the boys loved as much as we do. It made me miss Finbar who was in the kennel and wish there really was that potion Evan talks about to turn him young again (minus the bad behavior). The boys spent hours collecting horseshoe crabs and snails, and I enjoyed some knitting and birdwatching spotting a gorgeous heron.

Wednsday was a total beach day. We arrived at Skaket Beach at 9:30 AM and stayed until after 3:00 PM and returned after dinner for sunset. The boys made some friends with some Canadian boys who were fellow Star Wars fans and were happy to share their toy soldiers, tanks and boats.
The boys enjoyed lunch from the snack bar.

We experienced the lowering of the tide and the mile or so of flats to walk.
Despite the bugs, the sunset was amazing!

On Thursday morning, the boys took a spin on the Cape Cod Rail Trail. Greg and Evan was several miles, and I chased Liam on foot for a much shorter ride.

Then it was off to an ill-fated trip to Provincetown where we had reserved seats on a Critter Cruise that I had purchased on Groupon. It would have been a great deal if the trip hadn't been cancelled due to high winds. We saved the trip by having some ice cream and going back to the Wellfleet Sanctuary.

Our last full day on the Cape was a busy one filled with things that the boys wanted to do--trip to an playground called Castle in the Clouds in Harwich, miniature golf, and an encore trip to Crowe's Pasture which was even more beautiful the second time. And, of course, a trip to Finbar's Landing for soft serve.

Liam was so wiped out from the day's activities that he collapsed on the sofa and fell asleep.
